The Sacred Valley of the Incas is an extensive valley located in the Peruvian Andes, in an area between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, which is irrigated by the Vilcanota-Urubamba River.

Appreciated by the ancient Inca empire due to its special geographic and climatic qualities for the production of its agricultural riches, it is the place where the best corn grain of Peru is produced; it has wonderful landscapes, where Andean communities live and preserve ancestral customs and traditions, a sample of Cusco's living culture. It is also home to numerous archaeological monuments, a legacy of Inca splendor and wealth.

The valley surrounding Cusco was of great importance to the Incas, who planted it with palaces, temples and fortresses that are now World Heritage Sites. The magnificence is reflected in places such as Chinchero, Maras, Moray, Pisaq, and Ollantaytambo.

Chinchero Archaeological Park

Chinchero is known as "brave man". It is believed that it was the favorite showcase of the Inca Tupac Yupanqui, and, in addition, here you will find impressive aqueducts and terraces.

In its place was built the colonial church of Nuestra Señora de Monserrat. This church, built in the 17th century, includes canvases of the 'Cusco School'. The town is also famous for its handicraft market where you can still barter. The locals will show you how they dye their wool in intense colors. You can also enjoy the fantastic greenish landscapes of the cultivated areas.

Maras

The salt mines of Maras, also known as the salt mines, whose exploitation is as old as the Tahuantinsuyo. Located on the slope of the hill, they take advantage of a spring of saline water that nourishes the pools.

The use of the salt of Maras dates back thousands of years and is inherited in each family, there are about five thousand wells of about 5 square meters each, the water seeps into the wells and evaporates by the action of the sun, leaving crystals of coarse salt. Here, the villagers show visitors their ancestral techniques and allow them to participate in the collection.

Moray

Famous circular Inca terraces, which are circular stone constructions. This place is considered one of the main centers of agricultural research, for experimentation and planting of crops from different parts of the Inca empire. The different climates and altitudinal floors vary in temperature by approximately 20°C (from the first to the last). It is understood that they were built with the intention of making it possible to plant products from the coast and jungle in colder climates and at higher altitudes.

Pisac

It is famous for its astronomical observatory, its Inca and colonial constructions are amazing. It is known worldwide for its handicraft market and its impressive Inca archaeological remains, you can see how the Inca agronomists solved the problem of planting on the slopes of the hills. In the typical market you can see how the peasants who attend from different communities still use the barter system, and it is also a privileged place, as it is an ideal place for spiritual retreats.

Ollantanytambo 

It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Peru and South America. The area of Ollantaytambo is a monumental work of Inca architecture. It has been built on two mountains in a strategic place that dominates the entire valley. It was a military, religious, administrative and agricultural complex.

Ollantaytambo is the only Inca city that remains almost intact and their houses still serve as homes where their descendants live. The design of the city, its axes, its urban structure, the beauty of the volumes and its play of light and shadow make it a mystical place.

The main temple has a frontispiece with six pink granite monoliths brought from another place and perfectly assembled in the stone.

ITINERARY

• The tour begins with a trip in tourist transport from Cusco to the archaeological site of Pisac passing first by the viewpoint of Taray (where you can get scenic photos of the Sacred Valley of the Incas).
• In Pisac you will visit with a professional guide the main temples and buildings of this huge Inca city.
• From Pisac we will travel to the beautiful town of Urubamba. There we will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch.
• Then we will travel to the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo to visit its temples and monuments (as incredible as those of Machu Picchu).
• Finally we will return to Cusco passing through the famous village of Chinchero.
• In the town of Chinchero we will visit the Inca archaeological site (former palace of the emperor Tupac Yupanqui) as well as one of the famous textile centers that characterize this town.
• Finally we will travel for 40 minutes back to the city of Cusco. The tour ends in a central square, near the main hotels and restaurants.
