At 3,812 m.a.s.l., in the Peruvian altiplano is the highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca, in Puno. Here you can find the Floating Islands of the Uros, a group of approximately 80 islands made of totora reeds, an aquatic plant that grows on the surface of Lake Titicaca. The totora reeds are woven and stretched over another layer of the same to build the surface of each island.
These islands are inhabited by the Uros, one of the oldest cultures on the continent dating back to before the Incas. The inhabitants of this floating community claim to own the waters of Lake Titicaca.
