"Magnificence" is the only word to describe the scene as you contemplate the archaeological site of Machu Picchu. The top destination on many travelers' lists, the "lost city of the Incas" is a man-made wonder that has become a symbol of the ingenuity and prosperity of one of the most expansive empires in Latin American history.

Day 1.- CUSCO - OLLANTAYTAMBO - MACHUPICCHU

We will leave the hotel in Cusco at approximately 8:00am to Ollataytambo station, then we will take the 10:50am train to Machu Picchu where we will arrive at 12:30pm. We will leave our luggage at the selected hotel and have lunch in the locality at 2:00pm we will proceed to the Machupicchu citadel tour.

Only a century ago the incredible archaeological site was discovered; a two-year excavation led by archaeologist Hiram Bingham and the National Geographic Society of Washington DC allowed Machu Picchu to gain the prominence it deserves. Its fascination is due in part to its position, high on a mountain at 2430 masl/7972 feet. Believed to be an Inca settlement built to control the economies of neighboring communities, it is associated with being the royal property of Pachacuteq, the great Inca who sparked the expansion of the empire.

 Enjoy a two- to three-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu before spending the rest of the afternoon exploring the ruins after most visitors have left the site. Then, return by bus to your hotel in Aguas Calientes.

Day 2.- MACHUPICCHU - OLLATAYTAMBO - CUSCO

Second day in Machu Picchu accompanied by an expert guide.

This morning, we will take an early bus for a full day of activities in the citadel of Machu Picchu. Depending on your interests, there are a variety of excursions available:

• Inca Bridge Trek: this is a pleasant 40-minute round-trip hike. It starts from the site itself and takes you along a narrow Inca trail through lush vegetation to a stone Inca bridge. Grade: Easy
• Hike to Inti Punku or "Sun Gate": Inti Punku is the original gateway to Machu Picchu as you approach the site along the Inca Trail. Inti Punku is the first point on the Inca Trail where the ruins of Machu Picchu come into view. The views of the site and the surrounding landscape are magnificent. Total approximate time for this hike is 2 ½ hours (1 ¼ hour one way and 1 ¼ hour round trip). Grade: Moderate
• Hike to Huchuy Picchu Mountain - The hike is short and takes you up to 2497masl (8192 feet). The approximate time is 2 hours. Grade: Moderate
• Machu Picchu Mountain Hike - The hike starts at the site itself. It is strenuous and steep and takes you up to 3050 meters (10,007 feet). Total approximate time for this hike is 3-4 hours. Grade: Rigorous.
• Hike to Huayna Picchu, the mountain behind Machu Picchu takes you up to 2693 meters above sea level (8,835 feet), which provides unique and breathtaking views of the citadel of Machu Picchu. From here you can extend your hike to the mysterious Temple of the Moon, an exquisite example of Inca masonry. Approximate time for this hike is 3-4 hours. Grade: Rigorous.
• After your visit to Machu Picchu, you will take a bus to the town of Aguas Calientes to catch the 3:45pm train back to Cusco.
• Arrival time in Cusco 7:00pm.
